This year I was kind of like Santa. I travelled around the world from Australia to the USA to Canada and got to see the Christmas decorations in 3 different countries. I even ate a lot of cookies and drank some soy milk…. actually, the more I think about it the more I realize that I’m exactly like Santa! So here are some of my favourite Christmas experiences and Christmas decorations from my travels over this holiday season:
Christmas in Gold Coast, Australia
This was my second year in Queensland around the holidays and let me tell you, it didn’t get any less weird. Anyone from a cold country who travels to a warm country over the holidays will understand the bizarre feeling you get when “Let it Snow” is being played on the radio and it’s 30 degrees. To me it didn’t feel like Christmas because December is technically the summer in Australia, so I was caught off guard when I saw Santa posing on the beach in a speedo for his annual Christmas card. And, here’s a fun fact about Christmas in Australia: The reindeers take a break on the beach while the kangaroos take over surfing Santa’s sleigh around Australia. Bet you didn’t know that!
Christmas in LA, USA
I was in LA around American Thanksgiving but Christmas was already in full force. I went to the Original Farmers Market and walked around to look at the over the top decorations where I happened to see Santa fly by… I guess he was on his way to Thanksgiving dinner celebrations!
Christmas in Toronto, Canada
Visiting the Toronto Christmas Market, in the Distillery Historic District, has become a tradition for me. This year I went with my family who had never been. We drank apple cider by the Christmas tree and walked around looking at all the vendors. No sign of Santa here though…maybe he was still recovering from American Thanksgiving.
Christmas in Ottawa, Canada
I must have brought Australian Christmas home with me because it’s been the warmest Christmas that I can remember in Ottawa (yesterday was 18 degrees!). Although it was a green Christmas that didn’t stop Santa from coming! And as always, downtown Ottawa didn’t disappoint with the lights and decorations.

Thanks for sharing. We r doing our first Floruda Christmas /new Yrs & I agree it is weird hearing Christmas carols on the beach w/Palm trees. But I could get used to no snow!

I am actually in Florida right now and some of the Christmas decorations are still up! I can get used to no snow also!

The weather is insane right now, it was 20 C in montreal for Christmas! Not normal I hope it will snow for new year’s eve!

Yes I hope there is a bit of snow before I leave back to Australia. Was hoping to do a bit if skiing but didn’t look like that will happen!

I live in Australia and Christmas here is surreal. I was born in Finland. It’s the one time of the year I miss it – snow would be awesome just for a day!

Great that you got to experience Christmas in so many places. Totally understand about having Christmas in a hot country when one is used to winter! I talked about having Christmas in Nigeria on my blog – now that was an experience!
